Sunnyside could have easily looked past a sub.-500 Mountain
View team Friday night and thought about next week's key
game against Ironwood Ridge.
Instead, the Blue Devils (6-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 34-7
halftime lead and rolled to a 56-14 win to set up their
Class 5A Southern-II showdown with the Nighthawks.
"We just take one game at a time and we talk about improving
each day of practice and try to play better on Friday
nights," Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez said.
"Next Friday is a game that the winner is probably going to
win the region and probably be seeded in the top three (for
state), depending on what happens up north."
Manny Aguilar led Sunnyside with 118 rushing yards on 21
carries and three touchdowns while Jesus Vega completed 8 of
11 passes for 120 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown
strike to Marty Calles.
"The defense gave us real good field position," Aguilar
said. "The line executed real well, the receivers did a real
good job in blocking the corners and the defensive backs. We
just executed our offense great."
After limiting Casa Grande to five total yards in last
week's 55-0 win, the Blue Devils allowed the Mountain Lions
275 total yards, with 225 of those coming though the air.
"We did a few things wrong, but we ran the ball well and we
were able throw the ball well," Sanchez said. "Overall we
are improving a little bit each week, but next week we will
be able to tell if we are getting better."
The only bright spot for Mountain View (3-5, 0-1) came when
Myles Williams caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from C.J.
Evenson with 4:42 left in the third quarter. |
